1966 Chevelle SS
Phelps & Overstreet Motors Inc.
My 1966 Chevelle SS was built in the Atlanta assembly plant on April 22, 1966 and shipped to Phelps and Overstreet Motors Inc in Columbia Kentucky arriving April 26, 1966. The car was picked up the very next day on April 27th by its new owner David Lee Gupton of Finley Kentucky.
Paul Cavaseno from Winvoices was a huge help in getting in touch with people from the dealership and managed to track down Evelyn Phelps (T.P Phelps cousin and secretary) who still had the log from the dealership dating back to 1957. She was able to pull up the VIN for the car and this is where it gets really interesting. She gave Paul the key codes, the person your car was sold to, the sale date, factory invoice price, factory order number and date the car was received by Phelps. Paul then got me the phone number of the daughter of T.P. 'Cotton" Phelps and she was kind enough to share with me the picture of the dealership pictured above from 1964 . Willie Overstreet (partner) decided to retire in 1971 and at that time Cotton bought him out and the dealership continued under the name of Phelps Motors. Eventually the dealership was handed over to Tommy Jr and Kathy Phelps to run until they sold it in 1990.
After I picked the car up in Northern Mississippi on April 16, 2016, I decided to make a slight detour on the way home and take her back to where she was sold almost 50 years to the day. As you can see the building has changed quite a bit over the years and is now occupied by a local taxi cab company.
