Engine Rebuild

When I acquired my '69 SS in the spring of 2013 the N.O.M 454 was fairly fresh with only about 500 miles on it. As the years passed I noticed that not only did the hydraulic flat tappet cam sound like a solid, it was also burning oil and had the dreaded oil on the threads of the spark plugs... not good!
In the fall of 2016, I decided to pull the motor and have my friend (local Toronto engine build/tuner) John Rossitter look it over. To my dismay John's findings weren't good. Without going into all the details let's just say the only parts that could be used in the rebuild were the block and the heads... everything else was junk!
John and I sat down and discussed what I wanted out of his build and I told him that valve train noise drives me crazy... I needed vacuum for the stock power brakes and drive-ability was important as I live in the city.
So with that in mind here is a short list of what he's building:
  • 454, 2 bolt block from .030 to .040 over
  • Cast GM standard/standard crank
  • ARP main studs, rockers studs and bolts
  • Keith Black 207 hypereutectic pistons
  • Scat I-Beam rods
  • Howards 120606-12 hydraulic roller cam and lifters (Duration @ .050: 233/247 Lift: .601/.612)
  • RPM International roller rockers (to clear stock valve covers)
  • GM 049 heads - New guides and seals, 3 angle value job
  • Block decked, balanced and blueprinted
  • Melling oil pump, Clois roller timing chain and cam button
  • Michigan-Clevite coated main and cam bearing
Expect to have the motor back in the car by the end of February 2017 so updates will be posted then!
